Erica's Vision for Nevada

Key Issues

Reproductive Freedom

Education

Housing as a Human Right

Climate Justice

Erica is a proven champion for reproductive rights and freedoms. When the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, ending the 50-year right to abortion and bodily autonomy, Erica was ready to take up the fight in Nevada. With a keen understanding of the complexities of criminal and constitutional law, Erica drafted the 2022 Executive Order protecting patients seeking abortion care in this state from criminal prosecution.

Erica also took on crisis pregnancy centers, which use false and misleading advertisements, emotional manipulation, and delays to divert pregnant people from seeking abortions. Erica drafted “Abortion Information for Nevadans” launched by the Department of Health and Human Services, which ensured people mislead by these centers could report misconduct to the State for investigation. Yet, Governor Lombardo made it a priority to scrub any mention of crisis pregnancy centers from the website when he took office.

Erica knows the fight for bodily autonomy and fundamental freedom is not over because the right to abortion means little without access. Now, Erica is ready to continue her fight at the Nevada Legislature. Everyone, regardless of race, zip code, or socioeconomic status has the right to decide when, where, and how to start a family.

When elected, Erica will:

  • Take on Crisis Pregnancy Centers that prey on vulnerable patients looking for care, and work to prohibit their spread of misinformation, false advertising, and fake medical services.
  • Further protect people seeking abortions, as well as organizations providing care, from criminal prosecutions in other states by expanding the Executive Order to apply to all law enforcement agencies in the State.
  • Work to increase access to affordable abortions, contraception, and maternal healthcare.
  • Support our LGBTQ family in accessing life saving gender affirming care.

Erica attended Nevada public schools and watched her father, a teacher of over 40 years, dedicate his life to educating and caring for students in Nevada. Working to protect both our teachers and students is personal for Erica.

When elected, Erica will:

  • Work to increase funding for public schools.
  • Support smaller class sizes and greater resources for our teachers.
  • Increase financial support and opportunity for higher education and trade schools.
  • Make schools safer for LGBTQ students through proper accommodations.

By investing in our most vulnerable members of society, we can create a safer community for all. America’s prison and jail population, the largest in the worldincreased 500% over the last 40 years, resulting in more than 2 million people behind bars. This reactionary tactic has destabilized communities and families and had untold social and economic impacts.

In 2019, Nevada enacted sweeping criminal justice reforms. Since that time, violent crime has gone down while the State has saved millions of dollars reducing the prison population. Despite the data, Republicans are working to unwind this reform through regressive, dangerous policies that put lives at risk.

Investing in our mental health services is the bedrock of Erica’s approach to public safety. That is why she constructed and advanced a 55-million-dollar American Rescue Plan investment to build a new forensic hospital serving justice involved individuals suffering from mental health concerns. Despite the uncontroverted need, Republicans have chosen to cancel this project, putting lives at risk and costing the State upwards of $83,000 in judicial fines to date.

When elected, Erica will:

  • Prioritize evidence based harm reductive measures to address public safety concerns.
  • Expand Nevada forensic hospital capacity to ensure individuals suffering from mental illness are given treatment not jail.
  • Increase specialty court programs that are proven to reduce recidivism.
  • Provide resources, including housing, social workers, and substance use treatment to individuals on parole and probation.
  • Support victims of sex trafficking by providing resources not increasing the chance of justice involvement.
  • Protect LGBTQ justice involved individuals from harmful and discriminatory treatment in jails and prisons.

Fairness, justice, and community safety cannot prevail if we fail to provide the most basic, universal human needs to our community. Housing is a human right and every family deserves to live with peace, security, and dignity, no matter their socioeconomic status. Yet, corporate investors are causing home prices to skyrocket, while simultaneously pricing our neighbors out of the rental market. It is no wonder that more than 151,000 families with children have been reported experiencing homelessness per year while LGBTQ youth make up 40% of homeless youth but only 7% of the youth population.

Erica is dedicated to ensuring every person lives with dignity.

When elected, Erica will:

  • Prioritize advocacy for the unhoused and advance their human right to housing.
  • Expand renter protections, including rent stabilization for seniors and limiting unfair rental fees.
  • Work to increase affordable housing projects.
  • Increase services for those experiencing chronic homelessness, including supportive housing.
  • Limit the purchasing power of corporate investors.

Nevada must take a stand in combating climate change by investing in ethical alternatives to fossil fuels and protecting communities from the impact of rising temperatures and pollution. Across the State of Nevada, low-income communities, people of color, and indigenous populations have disproportionately borne the burden of climate change and fossil fuel extraction. Reno was named the fastest warming U.S. city in 2022, with an increased average temperature of 7.8 degrees Fahrenheit since 1978.

Erica is dedicated to protecting our public lands, expanding the urban canopy, and standing up to industry that preys on vulnerable communities.

When elected, Erica will:

  • Work to increase Reno’s urban canopy to reduce the impact of rising temperatures.
  • Center impacted voices while working to divest from fossil fuels.
  • Support infrastructure for low-income communities to protect from the health consequences of climate change

Healthcare is a human right. Yet, the Center for Disease control estimates 1 in 10 or  2.7 million people are living without health insurance. Erica has worked with seniors living on a fixed income needing to file for bankruptcy because they could no longer afford food or housing and also pay for medical care. That is no surprise, as medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy in the United States. No one should live like this. Erica will work to expand coverage and protect Nevadans right to equitable and affordable health care.

Justice for Workers

Unions are the backbone of our economy and ensure democratic rights in the workplace. Erica saw this first hand as a union kid, her mom was a member of the United Scenic Artists local 829 IATSE for over 25 years, and she understands that strong unions mean strong families. That is why Erica will always fight to strengthen unions, including ensuring that the State of Nevada not engage in any projects that do not employ union labor. Erica also supports greater investment in community workforce training and apprenticeships, as well as strengthening worker protections and rights for state employees.
