In the United States, criminal justice policy has become a battle of fact versus fiction. Fueled by the media’s depiction of “crime-ridden cities,” the public’s perception about community safety is often not tied to any supporting data.
This is no new phenomenon. Fictional stories of crime have won out over statistics since the 1980s when the federal government declared a “war on drugs” and public hysteria over the crack-cocaine “epidemic” permeated the news media.”
